Codebook for macOS 5.3.2 - Smoother Operator

Codebook for macOS 5.3.2 is available now for download and automatic updates.

This is a point release with some really nice changes that have perhaps been a long time coming.

Changes in this Version

  • NEW: Smoother Touch ID login experience! No more modal prompt, just touch the sensor.
  • Adds background sync for Codebook Cloud while application is locked
  • New update-available indicators for the Main Window and Secret Agent window to provide that info without interrupting the user
  • Fixes crash in Secret Agent when clicking outside the fields list
  • Fixes incorrect scrolling that could occur in Secret Agent window when showing longer note fields
  • Adds workaround for Dropbox sync error “Unable to upload Sync Lock File”
  • Layout improvements for setup views
  • Fixes tab focus loop on Sign In view for Codebook Cloud during setup
  • Should prevent some phantom popup views on macOS 26

Touch ID Login Improvement

In particular, if you use Touch ID Login to sign into Codebook, we’ve switched over to using an “embedded” authentication control for activating the Touch ID sensor on your Mac, instead of hitting you with the modal Touch ID authentication prompt. The login view now looks like this with Touch ID Login enabled:

We think this provides a much smoother interface and experience, and we’ve been enjoying it ourselves for a few weeks now.

Software Updater

For those who use the Direct Download build of Codebook for macOS (as opposed to the Mac App Store version), the Check For Updates / Software Update feature has gotten an upgrade. It sports an improved Update Available window that fits in better with macOS Tahoe, and it now does a better job of providing “gentle” updates. When Codebook detects an update is available, but it’s not an ideal time to interrupt you, it will add an indicator button to the Secret Agent window, and a similar icon button to the toolbar on the Main Window.

It should be noted that the UI improvements to the updater window are entirely due to the fine work of the maintainers of the Sparkle project.

Tahoe Update: Coming Soon

While this release contains some updates pertaining to macOS 26 Tahoe, it will be the next update that will be built specifically for use on macOS Tahoe.

Random Miscellany

Since you’ve read this far, something neat:

We’ve very recently gotten Codebook for Windows to work under WINE!

More to come soon…
