Import creating duplicate entries

I’m new to Codebook and trying to import my passwords and related info from a variety of sources. I found that when I export my passwords from codebook to a .csv file, make some changes (e.g. adding text in the Note value) and then import the file it is creating a duplicate entry instead of updating the original entry. I was careful not to change any of the identifying fields like entity, entityid, category, categoryid, etc. I only changed the Note text. I have tried this using excel and using notepad to edit the .csv file with the same result.
I was expecting that the entry with that entryid would have been updated but instead a new entry with a new EntryID was created which included my Note value. I was hoping to be able to export my data, make some updates, and then reload the data.
Please let me know if this is by design or an issue to be fixed. I am using Codebook v4.1.6.0

Hi @CalgaryChef

Thank you for trying Codebook and posting to the discussion forum.

Codebook Export/Import isn’t intended to be used for inline batch editing, instead you’ll want to modify your CSV completely and then run the import one time (on a fresh Codebook database).

So if you currently have your fully correct/modified data within your CSV, you can use these steps:

  1. Quit and close Codebook if it’s open.
  2. Backup your Sync Key if you haven’t already by following these steps: https://www.zetetic.net/codebook/documentation/backup-sync-key-help/?platform=windows
  3. Open File Explorer and paste this location in the address bar %APPDATA%\Zetetic LLC, then hit enter. Move the Strip folder that’s in that location onto the Desktop for now.
  4. Open Codebook, it will prompt you to setup a Master Password, set one up.
  5. File menu > Import and select your modified CSV file.
  6. Sync menu > Setup Sync Key and import your Sync Key from the Backup you have in step 2.

Let me know if you’re able to get your data imported by following these steps and if you have any questions along the way. Thanks!
