I use Favorites a lot. Frequently when I click on it nothing happens. If I click on something else, e.g. Recents and then Favorites, it works.Mildly annoying.
Hey @LDCR
Thanks for your support of Codebook and for posting to the discussion forum, although I’m sorry to hear about the trouble with accessing favorites. Could I ask which platform this occurs on, and what device type/os you’re running on so we can attempt to reproduce it on our end? Thanks!
I have experienced it on Windows 10 and Android.
On Codebook for Android, we have had intermittent reports of tapping Recents or Favorites improperly loading the other. This should be addressed in the next major version of Codebook, Codebook 4 – you can sign up to test the beta version here: https://www.zetetic.net/codebook/beta-signup/ if you haven’t already.
On Codebook for Windows, we haven’t had any reports of this issue. One thought I have is do you happen to have a large Note or Entry with a lot of data in the first spot of your Favorites list? When selecting Favorites on Codebook for Windows, the first Entry in the list is also loaded into the Entry View. If this first entry is relatively large, it could be the cause of the delay. If this is the case, would you attempt to rename the first Entry in the Favorites list so that it’s not sorted to the top and see if that helps at all.
Let me know the results. Thanks!
Thanks for the response.
No, the first entry in my Fovorites list is Amazon with just 4 entries, Password, title, URL and Userid, all short.

Chris,
Thanks for the response and sorry that initial suggestion didn’t help at all. Would you mind attempting to reproduce the issue with a fresh database with the default sample data? Here are the steps:
- Quit and close Codebook if it’s open.
- Open File Explorer and paste this in the address bar:
%APPDATA%\Zetetic LLC\
- Within that location, there’s a folder name
Strip
– this contains your current Codebook data and settings – Move that onto the Desktop. - Launch Codebook and set it up with a sample Master Password, attempt to access favorites (should contain only the one sample entry of “Welcome to Codebook” note)
Does the delay occur in this scenario?
If it doesn’t would you mind sharing your database size? That can be located under File > Database Information > Database Size.
Also could you run Integrity check under File > Integrity Check and let me know if it reports any errors.
If you’d prefer to provide this information privately, feel free to send it over to support@zetetic.net
Here are the steps to move your Codebook data back into place on Windows once you test with the fresh sample database:
- Close and Quit Codebook if it’s open.
- Open File Explorer and paste that app data address from above in the Address bar:
%APPDATA%\Zetetic LLC
- Delete the
Strip
folder that’s currently in there (from the fresh sample database) and move the one you previously had on the Desktop back into place.
Let me know the results and the answers to the follow up questions. Thanks!
Tried that. Could not get the problem on the sample database, having added an entry and marked it Favorite.
No errors on the Integrity check. (I do occasionally get them.)
Database size = 2638KB
Not that the problem is intermittent, not constant. Of course those are the hardest to track down.
I have signed up for the beta test of release 4. Note that my email address does not look like Gmail but it is.
Chris,
Thanks for that additional info. What type/speed of hard drive is on the machine experiencing the issue (i.e. SSD, HDD 5400/7200)? Does the slowdown always occur on the first access to Favorites after booting up Codebook or does it appear to occur randomly?
SSD. I think just the first access, but I’ll keep an eye on it.
Hi @Callum_Lyne
Are you currently experiencing an issue on Codebook for Windows, or Codebook for Android when viewing favorites? What version of Codebook do you currently have installed on each platform? Would you mind describing what happens?
How long is the delay before your data is loaded and available when accessing Favorites?
